Lets be Disaster Preparedness

Children are undoubtedly one of the most vulnerable groups affected by disasters. A large number of children are suffered, injured or even loss their life in various disasters all over the world. This vulnerability is a result of peoples limited understanding about hazard risks around their environment, which causes lack of preparedness in dealing with disaster. Disaster Preparedness Awareness in School To promote disaster preparedness and risk reduction concepts in school education, PMI mobilises members of Youth Red Cross (Palang Merah Remaja - PMR) networking and volunteers in 33 provinces. Started from the end of 2006, PMI has implemented Disaster Preparedness Awareness in School Programme as its efforts to promote disaster preparedness and risk reduction concept for children and youth. PMI develops the programme by taking benefit from the extracurricular education provided for PMR as well as using peer education approach. PMR members play important role and have opportunity to encourage their peer group both inside and outside of school. PMR members share the information with peer group to improve their life skills so they can reduce health problem as well as the impact caused by disaster. Children and youth share information together, identify problem, plan and develop collective solution through various risk reduction activities and behaviours. Positive behaviour from early stage will give improvement in children and youth life quality in the future and will influence adults to have the positive behaviour too.

Achievement in Disaster Preparedness Awareness in School

 1. Concept, strategy, and approach of Disaster Preparedness Awareness in School was introduced and integrated into PERTAMA (Community Based Integrated Risk Reduction) Programme in 13 provinces.

2. Up to 2008, PMI has conducted 6 trainings of Training for Facilitator to increase knowledge and skills of staff and volunteers as peer leader, peer support, and peer educator in risk reduction, as well as facilitator for children and youth in risk reduction activities.

3. Children and youth are involved in assessment process, decision-making, planning and implementing risk reduction activity.

4. In order to support socialisation of youth education strategy in disaster preparedness and risk reduction, PMI has produced manual Ayo Siaga Bencana (Lets be Prepared to Disaster) for PMR, manual Ayo Siaga Bencana for facilitator guidance, and IEC (Information, Education, Communication) tools. All publications have been distributed to all PMI chapters and PMI branches.

5. At national level, PMI plays important role as CDE Steering Committee member. PMI takes a lead in mainstreaming and advocacy activities. At district level, PMI also takes lead in advocacy activities for integrating disaster preparedness and risk reduction into school curriculum. Future Plan -With support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) and PNS (Partner National Societies), PMI will develop and publish the disaster preparedness schools manual. -PMI develops community based programmes plan such as PERTAMA or Community Based First Aid programme and integrates it into the PMR and volunteer management
