Participating Indonesian Red Cross in HIV & AIDS Field
Indonesian Red Cross or PMI is the organization that has 33 chapters. PMI has joint the ART (Asian Red Cross and Red Crescent Task Force) at the end of 1994, along with other national societies. In ART, PMI has began a Youth Peer Educator Program as the initial participation in preventing HIV spreading in youth group. Since 2000, PMI has expanded the HIV program to the branches that have capacity and ability to implement this program. Besides, PMI has also raised intervention HIV & AIDS program as its commitment to Geneva Declaration (2001).
To date, HIV & AIDS cases in Indonesia become a pandemic. Since the first case reported in 1987, Indonesia has become top five in Asia as one most countries high risk with HIV & AIDS. Many experts predict it, HIV & AIDS cases in Indonesia has reached 130,000 people. Thus, Indonesia must implement international agreement along with the national policy.
PMI Policy in HIV & AIDS Program in Indonesia
Active participating in HIV & AIDS through 3 (three) approaches, namely prevention, care and support with PLWHA (People Living With HIV & AIDS); anti stigma and discrimination; and to involve the PLWHA in many activities. PMI also endeavors to develop the social networking with other institutions or relevant organizations involving in HIV & AIDS program, including the PLWHA Network.
Activities in line with PMI Policy:
Prevention 1). Youth Peer Educator and Mobilization societies; 2) IEC materials distribution to the vulnerable people; 3). VCT (Voluntary Counseling Test); 4). Life skill, including condom using for high risk activities with HIV.
Care and Support 1). Supporting VCT to place the PLWHA for getting cure, care and support especially at home; 2). Making group support and networking in the society or strengthening the support group, 3). Developing support group and PLWHA Networking and partnership with PLWHA Organization.
Anti stigma and discrimination against PLWHA 1). Making sure that PMI has HIV policy in working environment and HIV program for all staff and volunteer; 2). Integrating gender issue and gender sexual abuse in program or PMI activity; 3). Peer educator, mobilization society and IEC material.
So far, PMI has been supported from Netherlands Red Cross, Japan Red Cross and Australian Red Cross as well as IFRC. Besides, many chapters or branches are also getting support from other Foundation like UNFPA, FHI/ASA and National AIDS Commission also local Government.
